Felt has outstanding, predictable, and consistent wicking capabilities.

Felt inking assemblies are used throughout the world to transfer printing ink. And, who has not used a felt tipped marking device? Other common applications include: oil wicks and applicators, deodorant transfer, felt wicking or blankets for oil spill recovery, rollers that transfer ink, stamp pads, water transfer pads for wetting adhesives, wood stain applicators, and countless other technical and everyday uses.

The wicking or capillary action of felt varies with the density. Both roll felt (SAE felts) and high density sheets can be converted for use as fluid transfer devices. Capillary action can be compared using a test that measures wicking height at 575 SSU, 70 degrees F, in inches. This measurement, related to density and type of felt, is summarized below.

A related and meaningful measurement involves the ability of felt to absorb liquid. The figures expressed are % by weight (1.0 sp. gr.) and by volume.
